At the 2019 FRC Event:
- Coming into Calgary, we truly wanted to show the world exactly how excited we are to be part of the FRC / FIRST community and to come to the Canadian Rockies Regional Competition.
- Develop a "team look" that matches our team and school (colours and mascot)
- T-shirts display our team logo, all of our sponsors, but also reflect the Game of "Destination: Deep Space
- Our school is known as the "L.A. Matheson Mustangs" so we wanted to play up the horse / western connection and our school colours of blue/silver/white.
- Team mascot
- Toy horses as our flag / pointer used to introduce our drive team before matches
- Blue cowboy hats and western bandanas
- Face paint and fake tattoos
- Bead necklaces and bracelets
- Blue scrunchies, hair extensions, hair colour
- Pit area / tent
- Team banner
- Toy horses secured to bars of tent when not in use introducing drive team
- Tent canvas was blue but we could not prove it was fire safe so we did not put it over the frame
- Posting regular updates of our progress through the competition on social media so that sponsors and family and friends can share in the glory and excitement of our experience here at the Canadian Pacific Regional competition.
- We are working hard this year to share our contagious team spirit with other teams. Our goals include:
- Make the effort to send a group of representatives from our team to meet each and every team on the practice day
- Not to discuss strategy or robot capabilities or design, but just to introduce ourselves and offer our assistance and wish them luck in the competition.
- At the beginning and end of each match, our drive team will try to shake hands with our alliance members.
- Mascot in the stands spreading joy
- Having much of our team in the stands to cheer on both our teams and other teams
- For our own matches, we have banners / flags to wave depending on our alliance colour
- Pins, pins, and more pins. As a team, we created nearly 1000 buttons. These buttons have our team logo, team number and promote not only safety, but also the core values of FIRST and this year's game theme.
- Volunteer to man the safety glasses table as much as we are needed by pit admin
- Created and distributed a safety poster that not only helped spread the importance of safety, but also showcased this year's theme.
- Enthusiastically greet judges and FRC staff. Volunteer to assist any way we can.
- Taking a photo of each team and putting a digital version on line
- Potentially creating a website where people from various teams can share photos of the event.
- Make the effort to send a group of representatives from our team to meet each and every team on the practice day
School Spirit Squad:
- As part of the spirit squad we decorate the entire school during multiple holidays.
- During Christmas we have over 70 Christmas trees that we put up all around the school. Since we are an inner-city school a lot of the students don’t come from a lot of money so we as a school want to insure they are comfortable, safe, and have a sense of belonging, especially during the holiday season.
- Each year we hold a community Halloween Night.
- We treat over 400 kids from the age of 1 – 12 (birth to grade 7).
- Volunteers work hard to set up interactive games
- We provide hot chocolate, tasty snacks, safety glow-sticks, and CANDY BAGS!
- In addition to that we actually have a huge display that we make that people come over to see. Each year we have a different theme for the display and this years’ theme was Carnival. The build team worked closely with the rest of the spirit team to help construct a game booth and a ticket booth. It was so much fun to make and the joy that comes from seeing other people smile is just out of this world. It is amazing to see hundreds of people come to our school to tour our handy work.
- We treat over 400 kids from the age of 1 – 12 (birth to grade 7).
- We run holiday themed games at lunch that encourage school-wide spirit and teamwork.
- We run the school store to raise funds for various school activities.
Yearbook:
- As a team we are very active in the production of our school's yearbook
- Our yearbook is a showcase book that actively reflects our commitment to producing a professional quality book that shares the experiences of the staff and students of our L.A. Matheson community
